What Exterior Coatings Are Actually For

Exterior decorating is maintenance before it's decoration. Masonry and woodwork on a British building spend the year absorbing rain, drying out, freezing and being bleached by UV. The coating's job is to keep water out while letting trapped moisture escape, and how well it does that determines whether you're repainting in four years or twelve.

The Dulux Trade Weathershield System

We use Weathershield on most exterior work because it's a system rather than a single product — a stabilising or alkali-resisting primer suited to the substrate, then masonry or woodwork topcoats designed to work with it. The masonry coatings are microporous, so they shed rain but still allow the wall to breathe, which is what stops paint blistering off a damp wall.

The woodwork range flexes with the timber as it moves through the seasons, which is where cheaper exterior gloss tends to fail: it goes brittle, cracks at the joints, and lets water in behind the film where it does real damage.

Equipment and Application

On large render and masonry areas we spray, which gets a consistent film thickness into the texture far more reliably than a roller, then back-roll where needed to work the coating in. Detailed woodwork — sills, fascias, frames — is usually cut in by hand, where control matters more than speed. Masking and sheeting the surroundings is a substantial part of any exterior job.

Preparation took the bulk of the time — cleaning down, treating the areas that had started to break up, and sealing before any topcoat. The finished frontage has stayed clean and intact, which on a customer-facing building matters more than the initial appearance.

Why Trade Masonry Coatings

Trade masonry paint carries more binder and pigment than retail equivalents, so it builds a thicker, more flexible film that bridges hairline cracks and holds its colour instead of fading patchily on the sunny elevation. On a house-sized job the price difference between trade and retail is small next to the labour, and it's the labour you don't want to repeat early.

Preparation Decides the Lifespan

Nearly every premature exterior failure we're called to comes back to preparation. Painting over a wall that's still damp, leaving flaking coatings in place, or skipping the stabilising primer on chalky render all produce a finish that looks fine for a season and then lifts. Washing down, scraping back to sound material, treating any bare or powdery areas and letting everything dry properly is unglamorous and it's the whole job.
