Why Masking Is Most of the Job

Spraying inside an occupied house means atomised paint in the air. It doesn't only land where the gun is pointed — fine overspray drifts, settles and dries on whatever it touches. Masking is what keeps that from becoming your problem, and on a kitchen it regularly takes longer than the spraying itself.

Why Ordinary Masking Isn't Enough

A roll of household masking tape and some newspaper won't do it. Cheap tape either lets paint bleed underneath or, worse, pulls the surface off when it's removed — we've seen tape strip the finish from worktops and lift paint from freshly decorated walls.

Overspray also travels further than people expect. Sealing the kitchen doorway is not optional; without it you'll find a fine dust on the hall floor and the stair banister.

The Tools We Actually Use

Low-tack and delicate-surface tapes for anything freshly painted or vulnerable. Proper masking film that clings by static for large areas like walls and windows. Self-adhesive fleece or hardboard for floors, chosen for the floor type — breathable fleece on wood, something more robust where there's traffic. Zip-doors in plastic sheeting so the house stays usable while we work.

Working Alongside Dustless Sanding

Masking and dust control go together. Extraction at the sanding disc catches most of the dust at source; masking contains what escapes. Doing one without the other still leaves you cleaning fine white powder off picture frames a fortnight later.

Precision and Control While Spraying

Good masking also improves the finish. Crisp, well-stuck edges give clean lines where sprayed units meet a wall or worktop, and a properly sealed room keeps air movement down so dust isn't being stirred into the wet coating.

Timing the Removal

Tape comes off at the right moment — too soon and the film is still soft enough to tear, too late and the coating has cured over the edge and lifts with the tape. On most systems that means pulling it back on itself at a shallow angle while the film has set but not fully hardened.
