"How much does a kitchen respray cost?" is one of the most common questions we're asked, and it's also one of the hardest to answer with a single figure. Every kitchen we spray is different — different door counts, different colours, different starting conditions — so a fair price for one kitchen can be entirely wrong for another. Rather than throw out a number that doesn't apply to your kitchen, here's an honest look at what actually moves the price up or down.

What Actually Determines the Price

Number of Doors and Drawers

This is the biggest factor by far. We price per door and per drawer front, so a compact kitchen with 12-15 openings will always cost less than a large kitchen with an island and 30+ openings. Larder units and tall pull-out units typically cost more per item than a standard cabinet door, simply because there's more surface area and more careful masking involved.

Colour Change

Going from a light colour to a similar light colour is usually the most straightforward job. Going from a dark or heavily pigmented colour to a much lighter one (or vice versa) often needs an extra coat or a dedicated stain-blocking primer to stop the old colour showing through — both add time and material cost.

Finish and Sheen

Satin and eggshell finishes are the most forgiving and the most commonly chosen for kitchens. A high-gloss finish looks stunning but shows every imperfection in the surface underneath, which usually means more preparation time to get right.

Condition of the Existing Units

A kitchen that's a few years old with light wear will need less preparation than one with heavy grease build-up, chips, or previous DIY paint jobs. Bare wood or previously painted surfaces in poor condition can add a day or more to a job simply in preparation before any paint goes on.

Worktops, End Panels and Extras

Doors and drawers are just part of the picture. End panels, pelmets, and any splashback areas painted to match are usually priced as separate line items, since they're a different shape and size to a standard door.

Access and Location

A ground-floor kitchen with easy van access is more straightforward than a job requiring significant furniture moving, tight staircases, or working around a family still living in the space day to day.

A Realistic Range

Most average family kitchens fall comfortably within that range, with the final price coming down to the specific factors above rather than a flat rate per kitchen.

Why It's Still a Fraction of Replacement Cost

Even at the higher end of that range, a respray typically costs 70-90% less than a full kitchen replacement, which regularly runs from £10,000 well into the £20,000s once you include new carcasses, worktops, plumbing and fitting. If your existing layout works and the cabinets themselves are structurally sound, a respray gives a genuinely comparable visual transformation for a fraction of the cost and disruption.
