An HVLP system is designed for precision. Unlike a high-pressure airless sprayer used for large-scale masonry, HVLP allows us to atomise the paint into a fine mist with minimal overspray. This is essential for intricate media units with shelving and cable ports, as it ensures an even coat reaches every corner without ‘runs’ or ‘sags’ in the paint film. The result is a level of smoothness that is impossible to replicate by hand.

Preparation and the Importance of Dustless Sanding

A sprayed finish is only as good as the surface underneath it. Any imperfection, grain raise, or speck of dust will be magnified once the paint is applied. This is why our process involves a heavy emphasis on mechanical preparation. Traditional sandpaper can often clog and create heat, which leads to unevenness, but the mesh abrasive design used with a dust-free sander allows for total debris removal. This ensures that the subsequent coat of paint bonds perfectly to the previous one, building up a durable and tactile finish.

The choice of paint is just as critical as the application method. For premium joinery, we often move away from standard retail emulsions and towards specialist trade coatings. On this project, we selected Tikkurila Helmi 10. This is a water-based wood furniture paint that is renowned among professional decorators for its levelling properties and durability.

• Sheen Level: Helmi 10 provides a sophisticated matte finish (10% sheen). This is ideal for media units as it does not reflect glare from television screens or lamps, yet it remains easy to clean.
• Hardness: Once fully cured, this coating is exceptionally hard-wearing, protecting the unit from the scuffs and scratches associated with daily use.
• Clarity of Colour: We had the paint tinted to Dulux Indian White, a soft, warm off-white that creates a bright, premium feel without the harshness of a pure brilliant white.

The Step-by-Step Spraying Process

Our process for a media unit follows a strict professional workflow to ensure longevity and aesthetics. First, the unit is thoroughly cleaned and degreased. If the unit is bare MDF, we apply a high-build primer designed to seal the edges and prevent the porous board from soaking up the topcoats unevenly.

Following the primer, we apply the first of multiple topcoats using our HVLP sprayer. After this coat has dried, we return with our Mirka sander to flatten any grain raise. This cycle of spraying and sanding is repeated until the depth of colour is rich and the texture is completely uniform. In the Northampton project, the combination of the Indian White hue and the precise spray tip selection resulted in a finish that looks like it was manufactured in a workshop, despite being completed on-site.
